Marstons Mills house fire investigated, fire pit cover may be to blame

May 18, 2023

Centerville Osterville Marstons Mills Fire Department officials are investigating whether sun reflecting off a metal fire pit cover started a house fire on Prince Avenue in Marstons Mills Sunday, according to a statement from fire Capt. Brian Morrison.

The fire department was called to a fire on the exterior of a 2½-story home at about 3:33 p.m. The fire was extinguished by the owners before the firefighters arrived, Morrison's statement said. The fire did not reach the interior of the home.

There was fire damage to three areas on the side of the house and a small section of shingles were removed, he said.

"The sun striking a metal fire pit cover which directed the light toward the shingles on the side of the house was investigated as the possible cause," Morrison said, adding that the final cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
