Labor unions across Nigeria protest against soaring cost of living under new president

Jun 14, 2024

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Labor unions marched across Nigeria on Wednesday to protest the soaring cost of living under the West African nation’s new president, with calls for the government to improve social welfare interventions to reduce hardship.

The unions, made up of government workers, said the economic incentives announced this week by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to ease hardship were not enough. They also accused him of failing to act quickly to cushion the effect of some of his policies, including the suspension of decadeslong, costly subsidies that have more than doubled the price of gas, causing a spike in prices for food and most other commodities.

An upcoming YMCA summer camp session in Idaho has been canceled so staff can cope with the emotional trauma of a bus crash that injured almost a dozen people. Meanwhile, Idaho State Police investigators are trying to determine the cause of Friday's crash. Eleven passengers were hospitalized, seven in critical condition, after the bus rolled over on a winding Idaho highway. The flipped bus blocked a state highway that follows the Payette River just north of Banks, causing a massive traffic jam. The bus was carrying about 30 campers and staff back to Boise from the Treasure Valley YMCA’s camp at Horsethief Reservoir.

Lane Thomas knocked in two runs and scored twice to help the last-place Nationals match a season best with their third straight win. The 24-year-old Adon, in his second stint with Washington this season and making his first major league start since July 7, 2022, was working on a perfect game with two outs in the sixth inning when No. 9 batter Luke Maile lined a clean single to right field. Elly De La Cruz followed with an infield single and TJ Friedl hit a three-run homer to make it 6-3.

In 2011, Dutrow had his license revoked for 10 years by New York officials after being charged with numerous medication and administrative violations. He fought the suspension until exhausting all of his legal appeals in 2013.

NEW YORK (AP) — Justin Verlander began his second stint with the Houston Astros by pitching seven solid innings, but he gave up a go-ahead homer to Jake Bauers that sent the New York Yankees to a 3-1 victory Saturday.

Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and his Republican challenger faced off at Kentucky's premier political event, the Fancy Farm picnic. Beshear declared at the picnic Saturday that he’s led Kentucky’s economy on a “historic winning streak” worthy of a second term. Republican nominee Daniel Cameron slammed the incumbent on social issues. With a statewide television audience watching, Beshear and Cameron presented sharply contrasting campaign themes. They endured the summer heat and a cascade of boos and taunts from partisans backing their rival. The campaign for Kentucky governor is one of the nation’s most closely watched contests.

Josh Berry was second, followed by Brandon Jones and Ty Gibbs, who was bumped from behind by Nemechek, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, on Lap 12. Nemechek, in the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, led 65 of the 125 laps on the two-mile oval and went ahead for the second and final time on Lap 103. Following a seventh caution, he stayed up front with little resistance from the field. Nemechek pulled into a first-place tie in the standings with Richard Childress Racing’s Justin Hill.

Matthew Wolff is in position for his first win in LIV Golf. The former Oklahoma State star had a 67 and is tied for the lead with David Puig. The Spaniard shot a 65. But it's far from a two-man race at The Greenbrier. Former U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau had a 61 and was among three players one shots behind. That group included Talor Gooch. He's going for his fourth win in LIV Golf this year. A total of nine players are separated by two shots going into the third and final round on the Old White course.

Lucas Glover and Billy Horschel were long shots to make the top 70 and qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Both started the Wyndham Championship outside the top 100. Now they're tied for the lead and have winning on their minds. Glover made nine birdies for a 62. Horschel had a 63. They have a one-shot lead over Russell Henley going into the final round. The Wyndham Championship is the final event before the FedEx Cup playoffs. Justin Thomas had a 66 and is right on the bubble. He's tied for 11th and probably needs a top 10 to qualify.
